The recipe editor

Build a recipe on the desktop, resolve its ingredients and write the method, before approval.

Open a recipe from Engineering > Recipes (⋯ > Edit), or click Add New to start one. The editor has three stages, shown as pills at the top: 1 Build, 2 Resolve and 3 Approve & promote.

At the top you can also switch the recipe between Recipe (a Menu Item) and Sub recipe, and rename it. The status chip shows Draft, Pending approval or Approved. Click Save to keep your changes.

Details

  • Category: required before you can promote. Add a new one with New category.
  • Yield: quantity and unit. Required for a sub recipe.
  • Photo: Menu Items only. Shown on the recipe card and PDF.

Ingredients

Click + Add ingredient and search the market list. Pick an item, a sub recipe, or choose Create to add a new one. Each line needs a quantity above zero. The Status column shows Matched or Needs matching.

Method

  • Click + Add step for each step, and choose its type: Prep, Cook, Assemble, Plate or Other.
  • Optionally add Duration, Equipment and Temp.
  • Reorder with Move up and Move down.
  • Click on the Method card to draft the steps from your ingredients. Save the recipe first. Nothing is kept until you save again, so read and edit each drafted step.

2. Resolve

Every ingredient must be matched to your market list or created as a new item. The ring shows how many are done. For each unmatched line, search and click Match, or click Create as new item. Made a mistake? Click Undo.

For many lines at once, use Match many at once, which opens Sort and match.

When every line is matched you will see All matched, and can move on to approval.

3. Approve & promote

See Approve and promote.

Allergens and nutrition

These are not typed into the editor. They are worked out from the ingredients:

  • Allergens roll up from every ingredient and sub recipe. To correct one, fix it on the ingredient and every recipe that uses it updates.
  • Nutrition adds up the ingredients. If any ingredient has no nutrition yet, ChefAdmin says the estimate is incomplete and lists what is missing, rather than showing a number that is too low.

See them on the recipe card. To fill gaps for many ingredients at once, use Complete your ingredients on Engineering Home.
